It is difficult to express just how important the Western Monarch Butterfly (WMB) is to all of us. It is one of the most recognizable and most important of the pollinators, on which we humans rely to bring food to our table. What’s more, what has happened to the Monarch Butterfly represents what is happening to many other pollinators; it is truly the “canary in the coal mine” for their, and our, survival. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has found that adding the WMB to its endangered species list is warranted. This finding has been confirmed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Now is the time to act locally to bring the Monarch Butterfly back from the brink of extinction.
